One of Effingham’s most notable historical figures is Lord Howard of Effingham, the Lord High Admiral who played a crucial role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The Howard of Effingham School, referred to as Howard, was named after the Lord and founded in 1940. It has grown significantly over the decades to become a prominent secondary school in Surrey.

The parade of shops in the heart of the village offers Layla’s – a lovely independent café offering service with a friendly smile. We also have Headliners unisex salon, Parker and Sons’ hardware store, The Bakery, a village shop and Bevan’s ‘award winning’ Butchers est.1929

The village has two superb dog friendly pubs both serving fantastic food throughout the year.

We recently all had the pleasure of meeting Loolabell and having a fantastic lunch from her outdoor kitchen on KGV playing fields.

The village has a number of voluntary organisations helping the community including the parish council and residents association with noticeboards at the end of the parade of shops.
